DETAILED ITINERARY

Day Wise

Day 01: ARRIVE PARO BY AIR / PARO – THIMPHU BY SURFACE

Arrive Paro and transfer to Thimpu by surface (55 kms, 02 hrs drive)

Upon arrival transfer to Hotel.

Afternoon: visit Trashichho Dzong “Tashichho Dzong has been the seat of the government since 1952 and presently houses the throne room and offices of the king, the secretariat and the ministries of home affairs and finance. Other government departments are housed in buildings nearby.
The dzong is located close to Thimphu town, next to the banks of the Wangchhu River. It is an impressively large structure, surrounded by well-kept lawns and beautiful gardens”

Day 02: IN THIMPHU

Breakfast at Hotel.

Morning: Visit National Library (Closed on Sunday and Mondays) “which has vast collection of ancient Buddhist texts and manuscripts”, visit Textile Museum “which provides an excellent introduction about the techniques, style of various textiles woven in the country along with the exhibitions of the natural dress ‘gho’ for men and ‘kira’ for women”, visit Institute of Zorig Chusum (commonly known as painting school) “where you can see young children learning and practicing the ancient art and crafts of Bhutan”

 

Afternoon: Visit Memorial Chorten “the stupa built 1974 in loving memory of Bhutan’s Third King, his Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, where a multi – storied stupa and numerous paintings are exhibited providing as insight into Buddhist philosophy” & visit Takin Reserve “where you can see Takin, the national animal of Bhutan”.

If Weekend (Friday till Sunday), visit to weekend vegetable market held at the Centenary Farmer market, the market provides an opportunity to mingle with the local people and a wide variety of foodstuffs.

Day 03: THIMPHU – TRONGSA SURFACE (200 km, 06 hrs drive)

Breakfast at Hotel.

Leave for Trongsa by surface with a short stop at Dochula pass (3,080m), stopping briefly here to take in the view and admire the chorten, Mani wall, and prayer flags which decorate the highest point on the road.

Lunch in Wangduephodrang.

After lunch leave for Trongsa across Pelela pass (3,300 m) “the traditional boundary between east and west. The pass is marked by a large prayer flag and the ground discovered with high altitude dwarf bamboo”. Stop en route at Chendbji Chorten “which was built in 18th century by a Lama named Shida, it is Nepalese in style with eyes painted at four cardinal points”.

Arrive Trongsa & transfer to the hotel.
Dinner & Overnight at Hotel.

Day 04: TRONGSA – BUMTHANG BY SURFACE (68 kms, 03 hrs drive)
Breakfast at Hotel.

Morning: Visit Trongsa Dzong “built in 1648 it was the seat of power over central and eastern Bhutan. Both the first and second Kings of Bhutan ruled the country from this ancient seat. All five Kings were invested as Trongsa Penlop (‘governor’) prior to ascending the throne. The Dzong is a massive structure with many levels, sloping down the contours of the ridge on which it is built”.

Later drive to Bumthang takes you over the picturesque Yotong La Pass and down into Chhume Valley “home to famous yatra weaving” see the weavers create their intricate handiwork and browse the finished textiles

Upon arrival transfer to Hotel.

Day 05: IN BUMTHANG
Breakfast at Hotel.

Morning: Visit to Jambay Lakhang “this monastery was built in the 7th century by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo. It is one of the 108 monasteries built by him to subdue evil spirit in the Himalayan region”, Kurje Lhakhang “One of Bhutan’s most sacred monasteries. A body print of Guru Rinpoche is preserved in a cave around which the oldest of the three buildings is built”, Jakar Dzong “the castle of the white bird”

Afternoon: Visit Tamshing Lhakhang “this temple was founded in 1501 by Terton Pema Lingpa, the re- incarnation of Guru Padmasambhava. The monastery has very ancient religious painting like the 1000 buddhas and 21 taras (female form of Buddhistava)”

Dinner & Overnight at Hotel

Day 06: BUMTHANG – PUNAKHA BY SURFACE (205 kms, 07 hrs drive)
Breakfast at Hotel.

Leave for Punakha by surface enroute visit Wangduephodrang Dzong “Stretched along the hilltop above the confluence of Punakha Chu and Tang Chu rivers, the imposing Wangduephodrang Dzong is the town’s most visible features”

Lunch at Chimi Lhakhang cafeteria

Upon arrival transfer to Hotel

Day 07: PUNAKHA – PARO BY SURFACE (120 kms, 4 ½ hrs drive)
Breakfast at Hotel.

Morning: Visit Punakha Dzong “built strategically at the junction of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to serve as the religious and administrative center of the region until the mid-1950s”

Later leave for Paro by surface, upon arrival transfer to Hotel.

Afternoon: Visit Ta Dzong “the National Museum of the Kingdom. Originally built as Watch Tower since 1967 it is serving as the National Museum of the country and holding fascinating collection of art, artifacts, thangkha paintings and Bhutan’s exquisite postage stamps”, visit Rinpung Dzong (the fortress on a heap of jewels) “Built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal , the first spiritual and temporal ruler of Bhutan, the Dzong houses the monastic body of Paro, the office of the Dzongda (district administrative head) and Thrimpon (judge) of Paro district”,

Day 08: IN PARO
Breakfast at Hotel.

Morning: Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) “is built around a cave in which Guru Rinpoche (also known as Guru Padmasambhava) meditated. The monastery clings seemingly impossible to a cliff of rock at 914m above the valley floor. A hike up to the viewpoint opposite the monastery is exhausting, thrilling & mystical. The legend has it that Guru Rimpoche is said to have flown to the site of monastery on the back of tigress and meditated in the cave”

Lunch at Taktsang Cafeteria

Afternoon: Visit Kyichu Lhakhang “is said to have been built by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet”

Evening: Visit local market and the public park where one can watch the locals practicing Archery the national sport of Bhutan.

Dinner & Overnight at Hotel.

Day 09: LEAVE PARO
Breakfast at Hotel

At a convenient time transfer to the Airport to board onward destination
